Extraction MethodUpdated 6 months ago

Our first launch of tinctures will be alcohol-based, meaning alcohol is the primary menstruum. There are two primary menstruums used for herbal extracts:

  • Alcohol/Water

  • Glycerin

So, why alcohol?

  • Extraction: A blend of alcohol and water is fantastic at extracting a wide range of plant compounds, including those that glycerin can’t quite manage to grasp.

  • Bioavailability: When consumed, the alcohol helps our bodies assimilate the herbal constituents more efficiently. The body also does not have to break apart a whole herb to obtain the active compounds - the alcohol blend extraction already did that.

  • Preservation: Alcohol acts as a natural preservative, allowing tinctures to have a shelf life that can span several years. A long shelf life is critical for any herbal supplement, as potency will decline once a shelf life is reached.

  • Sustainability: The alcohol blend extracts plant compounds more efficiently than other solvents, such as glycerin. By reducing the amount of raw plant material needed, we not only minimize our impact on the environment but also make better use of our natural resources.

There is a reason alcohol-based tinctures have lasted the test of time. They work. The alcohol blend most efficiently pulls out the broadest range of water-soluble and fat-soluble phytochemicals found within the botanical used. This is the most potent form of a plant extract available. They have the highest bioavailability and absorption rate of other supplements, including capsules, gummies, and teas, and are produced in a way that doesn’t harm the active compounds within the plant.
